"The Jester Comes Out to Play" - 2020
24"h x 24"w Medium: mixed media on canvas $875, unframed, ready to hang Having dabbled in wet felting methods and thoroughly enjoying the entire process, I centred on the feeling of the fiber. Using fiber artist Jo-ann Zorzi's palette of colours, I tried to express in paint the textures that wool can render with a gentle nod to the vessel's form. "I do not replicate nature. I am inspired by the improvisation of my environment."

Through bold marks and a feel for colour working in layers, Ottawa artist Catherine Gutsche uses a process driven method to capture her joy for the unpredictability of her practice. She creates intricate non-representational compositions, often alluding to forms in nature but highly abstracted, driven by a need to “engage my mind and express my connections to my environment”.
The 7 Works Collective challenges have stretched my usual approach into new areas, experimenting with new techniques, new materials and altered styles.
