I did a lot of thinking about this challenge from abstract artist Lynn Dubinsky and the idea of the world becoming smaller with our isolating in our homes. For me, it brought to the forefront images from the news stories of people inside, behind windows still trying their best to connect to one another and communicate. Each of my windows has a thin connection to another while we all wait for us all to be reunited.
"I do not replicate nature. I am inspired by the improvisation of my environment."
About the Artist
Through bold marks and a feel for colour working in layers, Ottawa artist Catherine Gutsche uses a process driven method to capture her joy for the unpredictability of her practice. She creates intricate non-representational compositions, often alluding to forms in nature but highly abstracted, driven by a need to “engage my mind and express my connections to my environment”.
The 7 Works Collective challenges have stretched my usual approach into new areas, experimenting with new techniques, new materials and altered styles. Who knows what will come out of these exercises in the future. "Play" makes artists grow.
