Challenge Sixteen

Our first challenge was from photographer Mario Cerroni
The Water Challenge came to Catherine Gutsche  after the end of summer when the pool closed and the cooler weather set in. Harbingers of the winter to come. In as much as we miss the cooling waters of a summer swim on a hot day there is joy in the changes that water undertakes in the winter and the seasons between. There are reflections to be seen, things that float on the water, things that we see below the water's surface, the foam of rushing water and the frosty forms of ice once water freezes.

What is it about water that inspires you? Tell us about water.

"Water"
90"h x 24"w, embroidery on linen
$2000

Water, water everywhere.
A winter project that was contemplative and challenging. I had not hand embroidered such a large piece before. I began at the end of the long roll of vintage linen and jut kept sewing.
It was free form unlike like my usual carefully planned embroideries. It was a physical comfort as well as an artful endeavour.

"Sunday on Lake Ontario"
6”h x 24”w x 1.5”d, stained glass and mirror mosaic
$325

I have lived my entire life by water. In the water and on the water. I feel joy in the lofting of a jib and the sound of the boat slicing through the waves.
Recently I was standing on shore, mesmerized by the high traffic of sailboats on Lake Ontario. The sun sparkling on the water of many shades of blue. Can you feel the breeze?

With this challenge I decided to try something representational and this is the result.

"My Morning Walks"
46.5"h x 46.5"w, acrylic on gallery depth canvas
$2500

I love to walk early in the morning at Gibraltar point on the island of Toronto on the empty pier, with tons of wildlife, beautiful gardens and discovering the many hidden paths to the beach.

"Reflected"
28"h x 28"w, acrylic on canvas
$1275

Whenever I walk along a river, I notice in the moving water, what is reflected on the surface but I also take note of what lays below the water. As the water moves both the reflected images and the riverbed  change and move, creating the most interesting patterns.

24"x18", silk fiber drawing/fusion
