Challenge Nine

Picture
Texture artist Judi Miller continues the project with Challenge number Nine.

"La Foce - Pergola", embroidery, 10x8, $500, framed

A number of years ago I read War in Val d'Orcia, An Italian War Diary 1943-1944 by Iris Origo.

I was fascinated by this diary of the ignoble times in Italy during WWII.

We visited the area in 2009 but couldn't find La Foce, it is well hidden. Another visit to the area in 2014 was successful.

I visited with a friend, late in the afternoon in June. We were lucky enough to have a guide that read from Origo's diary of that day. The sun was going down.

It was a stunning experience, like everything lined, the sun going down, the beautiful reading, my friend being there to share the experience. Unbelievable!

I have been extremely lucky to have traveled to some fantastic places but this moment was special.

I would like to challenge you to share your special travel moment.

"The Worth of Water"
7”h x 8.75”w, mixed media mosaic
SOLD

Having lived in and travelled to a number of places around the globe, water is a magnet for me. I love the array of colours in the oceans - the feel and the smell. The treasures I have found by the water are also a draw....driftwood, sea glass, stones and historical fragments of pottery tell a magical story. This piece is 8.75”w x 7”h and includes driftwood, tissue, Italian smalti, stained glass, sea glass, stones, tile and beads.

"St Malo"
10"h x 8"w, acrylic on canvas

When I was thirteen I spent some time in St Malo, France. This old walled city made an impression on me as it was my first trip abroad. A very special place.

"I Remember Australia"
12"h x 24"w, mixed media, acrylic
$475

It was hot, it was wet, it was impressive. In this work I am painting my memory of Ayers Rock. I have incorporated hints from the outback with its red rock. Hot sandy soil that left traces in my saddles at the end of every day especially on those days when it rained intensely without mercy. Who gets to "swim" around Ayers Rock instead of climbing it?

"Memories of Skye"
SOLD

Judi brought me back to Scotland. Isle of Skye, Portree, Fairy pools, Scotch tasting, long walks with my 2nd cousin along the property and remnants of my family’s home as well as the burial grounds of my ancestors. My husbands family castle included a beautiful walk along a stream and through a field of sheep who bleated at us all the way. An awesome trip that I hope to do again soon.

I have layered this piece with memories and colours, revealing and concealing- I also painted lines that to me resemble threads - like Judi’s beautiful work and which in mine represent the threads of life that we are all connected to by history.
