Challenge Four

Kathryn Bossy - mosaic artist
Challenge number four was from Mosaic artist Kathryn Spooner Bossy.

"Up the Line", 24”h x 18”w, mixed media mosaic, using stained glass, handpainted tile, recycled vintage telephone wire, glass cane and stained glass on a textured, painted background.

Hanging laundry on the line will always remind me of family. Visiting with my Nanny and Grampa meant sleeping on line-fresh sheets and colourful, often whimsical quilts handmade with love.

like a reincarnation
in the laundry room
scrubbed by wind and rain
the seeds then hung to dry
emerging
from the season’s spin cycle
fresh and renewed
into the new growth of spring

“Layered Lines”
10"h x 10"w, acrylic/collage on canvas

Inspired by the clothes line aspect of Kathryn Bossy’s challenge I used collage to make layers of lines.

"On a Blustery Day"
27"h x 36"w, acrylic on canvas

For me this piece was all about the wind and its interaction with the laundry. I am capturing the movement with hints of the clothing colours.

"whimsy for the wind"
18"h x 18"w, silk fiber drawing/fusion

I embraced the whimsical nature of Kathryn's mosaic and included some old fashioned wooden clothes pegs in playful colours on my piece.

"Breeze"
11"h x 13"w, free motion embroidery on cotton, backed on natural linen

My interpretation of Kathryn Bossy’s mosaic is quite literal, I loved the swirly motifs that made you feel the breeze blowing the clothesline. Free motion embroidered swirls using metallic thread to highlight the motion of the swirly motifs. I used water soluble fabric to sew items for the clothesline. I liked the 3D effect.

"Canada Day at the Cottage"
16"h x 40"w, acrylic
SOLD

This inspiration of mosaics was FUN! I loved the memories that came back of hanging laundry on the line at the cottage and that heavenly smell!

Sadly COVID has taken the fun out of cottages as well as Canada Day this year.
