Challenge Six

Jo-ann Zorzi - fiber artist
Challenge number six was from Fiber artist Jo-ann Zorzi.

"vessel", 11"h x 11"w x 5"d, wet felted wool, $95

I love the feel of fiber under my hands. Coaxing a whimsical 3D vessel out of a pile of woolen fibers, soap and water feeds my soul.

I wanted to create interesting shapes with vibrant colors. I used fiber directionality and thickness and inclusions to create the hills and valleys.

"Flowers of Dreams"
15"h x 6"w, mixed media mosaic on bamboo frame
$245, unframed, ready to hang

Inspired by the tactile and playful felted vessel created by Jo-ann Zorzi I began exploring a colour palette that I rarely use. The bright citrus tones marrying with shades of purple led me to embrace a feeling of gleeful boldness in this vase of 7 flowers. I love that felting is so tactile - pleasing to the touch as well as the eye. As with felting, mosaic often has many layers. This piece starts with Japanese paper and then is layered with beads, glass, tile, glass rod, upcycled teacups and wire.

"Skins"
14"h x 14"w (approximately), archival inkjet print
$350

The texture of all lives
reflected back to us
in nature

the cocoon that encircles our growth
then shed with each new stage

Lynn Dubinsky - abstract artistLynn Dubinsky
"Vessel"
36"h x 24"w, acrylic, collage on canvas
$600

When I painted this I was inspired by thoughts of old Victorian glass bottles sometimes found washed ashore . The background is reminiscent of vintage wallpaper.

Catherine Gutsche - abstract artistCatherine Gutsche
"The Jester Comes Out to Play"
24"h x 24"w, mixed media on canvas
$875, unframed, ready to hang

Having dabbled in wet felting methods and thoroughly enjoying the entire process, I centred on the feeling of the fibers in my hands.

Using Jo-ann's palette of colours, I express, in paint, the textures that wool can render with a gentle nod to the vessel's form.

Karen Wynne Mackay - abstract artistKaren Wynne Mackay
"Mira" (Sanskrit for ocean)
40"h x 30"w, acrylic
$1200, unframed, ready to hang

Jo-ann’s  vessel brought me to the ocean.

The colours and extraordinary shape brought my mind to the oceans brightly coloured corals and its many organic shapes.

It was fun to remember different oceans and lakes that day.

Sadly, COVID has made it impossible to travel.

Judi Miller - textile artJudi Miller
"Tangle"
3"h x 2"w, thread on soluble fabric
NFS - not for sale (in progress)

As a textile artist I was curious how to take Challenge Six. Can I use my medium to build a vessel? Yes, I used threads I sweep up after each sewing session. I love the idea of working up or building a 3 dimensional object. I admire the time, thought and physical exertion that go into Jo-ann Zorzi’s felted artwork.
