Challenge Ten

Picture
Abstract Artist Catherine Gutsche continues the project with Challenge number Ten.

"Spanish Guitar", 28"h x 46"w, acrylic, $1900

Music has always played a role in my painting. You will rarely find me in my studio without my sound track playing in the background. Quiet meditative music will give me quiet soft blues and cool greens that flow together. In this case of "Spanish Guitar" it was definitely the Spanish sounds that drove me to these hot colours and aggressive brush strokes.  I don't believe I could have painted a small work with this music playing, it encouraged me to use full arm motions to achieve the impression of this sound.

I have often commented that it is my environment and surroundings that influence my work - that includes SOUND.

"Hippie Hippie Shake"
10”h x 8”w, created with stained glass, Japanese paper, tissue, beads, vintage china, tile and grout
$260

The pops of colour are a result of listening to happy dance tunes from every decade, while working. Shakespeare said it best: if music be the food of love, play on….

"Riff"

"Jazz it up"
30"h x 24"w, acrylic, collage on canvas
$400

My choice of music is eclectic, so for this challenge I chose to go with jazz. I was reminded of a trip to New Orleans where music in the French Quarter completely surrounds you from noon into the night .

"I see the music in you"
36"h x 48"w, acrylic, collage on canvas
SOLD

This piece was made from another inspiration by Catherine Gutsche - a Spanish guitar, music that you paint to, a musical piece that inspires you. My love of music is very well known and my husband is the "music man" of our family. All our friends and family love when he makes up a new playlist. This is for you Craig- I see the music in you.

“Dream”
10"h x 14"w, embroidery
$400, framed

Like many artists I work in my studio, creating to different musical genre. Often, while listening,  I will find myself taken away, as I dream of all manner of things.

"flow"
16"h x 20"w, silk fiber drawing/fusion
$400

Counter intuitively, the more delicate stroke my art needs, the louder and stronger the beat of music - the more it allows my creativity to flow through my hands. The music connects in my brain in a way that allows complete focus on my art and triggers the creativity within my soul.
