Challenge Five

Lynn Dubinsky - abstract artist
Challenge number five was from Abstract artist Lynn Dubinsky.

"Close Quarters", 30"h x 30"w, acrylic on canvas, $600

This painting was inspired by our experience during the pandemic we find ourselves living through, I found myself thinking about how we were all isolating in our homes and how this virus was affecting the whole planet and all its citizens. The earth suddenly felt small.

12”h x 3”w, mixed media mosaic using Japanese paper, vintage china, Swarovski Crystal, stained glass on bamboo backing
SOLD

Many late nights I have spent time sitting at the north facing windows, gazing out at the lake, the sky and the trees. I think of other people looking at the same sky and asking the same questions. I’ve seen many shooting stars and watched the twinkling reflections in the lake and heard the night sounds of owls and loons reminding me to breathe and rest.

"I need to open the window soon"
26"h x 20"w (approximately), archival inkjet print
$450

I need to open the window soon
Before the politics of decay
Consumes the remnants of my soul

Yes – I need to open that window soon
Get the colour back into my face
Reshape the person I thought I’d be
Remove the rust from social distancing

I need to open the window soon
Go beyond the boundaries
To see the world again
Let the politics dissolve
and take away the gulf
that’s grown between us

I need to open the window soon
Before I fade and can’t resume

I did a lot of thinking about this challenge and the idea of the world becoming smaller with isolating in our homes. For me, it brought to the forefront images from the news stories of people inside, behind windows still trying their best to connect to one another and communicate. Each of my windows has a thin connection to another while we all wait for us all to be reunited.

Lynn’s piece titled “World" was shared at the same time as it was announced that the children were allowed to play in the park. The line ups and extra precautions didn’t destroy the joy of the children’s laughter. This day gave me hope for a breakthrough of the COVID pandemic.

When I first saw ‘Close Quarters’ by Lynn Dubinsky I saw Van Gogh’s bedroom, I saw a room with a window. Like Lynn I find myself thinking often of the isolation the COVID virus is bringing us. Upon reflection the last few months have been strange and wonderful times. My world at times seems small but also other times large and far away. I have been blessed to hear from friends and family around the world who are feeling similarly. We are all feeling uncertain in the future but somehow comforted that we are all in the same situation.

The mask has become a symbol of the pandemic. It has provided protection for the individual and the whole, but it has also caused huge divides - protection of at risk populations and society as a whole vs individual freedom. For many it has also become an internal battle of despair vs hope, illness vs health, loneliness vs connection.......
